Why contractors lose website leads (and how to stop it).

Run the math on one lost lead. If your average ticket is $850 and you close six of every ten leads you actually talk to, every lead that slips through your website un-captured costs you about $500 in expected revenue. Lose one a day and that's a truck payment. Lose three and it's a salary.

I run an electrical shop on ServiceTitan, and for years I watched money leak out of our website without knowing where the holes were. When I finally instrumented everything, the leaks fell into five buckets. Here they are, worst first.

Leak #1: The multi-step form (the big one)

Most booking widgets and schedulers make the visitor complete a wizard — service, address, calendar, time, confirmation — before the lead exists anywhere. Every additional step sheds real people: the homeowner interrupted by a kid, the one who doesn't want to commit to a time yet, the one whose thumb slips on step four.

Here's the brutal part: those people gave you their name and phone number on step one, and your system threw them away because they didn't finish steps two through six. When we looked at our own analytics, a large share of form starters never reached the final screen. Those weren't tire-kickers — they were homeowners with dead outlets who got interrupted.

The fix is architectural, not cosmetic: capture the lead on the first click, then make everything else optional. We call this lead-first booking — here's exactly how it works. When we made this one change, online bookings rose more than 200% in four months.

Leak #2: Forms that send email instead of creating bookings

The default contractor contact form emails the office. That email waits — through lunch, through a service call, sometimes overnight. Industry speed-to-lead studies all say the same thing: contact within minutes and you're likely the only bidder; contact the next day and the homeowner has already called someone else.

The fix: submissions should land where your CSRs already live — for ServiceTitan shops, the Bookings tab — the second they're submitted. Not an inbox, not a spreadsheet, not a Zapier queue. Here's a comparison of every way to wire a form into ServiceTitan.

Leak #3: Nobody calls the "incomplete" lead

Even shops that capture partial leads often treat them as second-class: the completed bookings get called first, the "abandoned" ones maybe get an email days later. Backwards. The person who abandoned mid-scheduling is often your hottest lead — they wanted an appointment so much they started booking one at 9pm from their couch.

The fix: a process rule, not software — captured-but-unscheduled leads get called within the hour, first in the queue. Your CSR opens with "You started booking a visit with us —" and the close rate on those calls will surprise you.

Leak #4: Mobile friction

Most emergency searches — the highest-intent traffic you'll ever get — happen on a phone. Forms with tiny tap targets, fields that trigger iOS zoom, dropdowns that fight the keyboard, or a layout that breaks at 375px will quietly bleed exactly the visitors who were readiest to buy. Test your own form on your own phone, on cellular, tonight.

Leak #5: Silent failures

The scariest leak because it's invisible: the API credential that expired, the middleware Zap that errored, the plugin update that broke the form. Weeks can pass before anyone notices the website's gone quiet — you just assume it's a slow month.

The fix: your capture system needs a safety net that (a) stores every submission independently of any API, (b) alerts you the moment a sync fails, and (c) retries automatically. That's not a premium nicety — it's the difference between a hiccup and a silent month of lost jobs. It's why we built zero-loss backup into LeadCapture ST as a core feature, not an add-on.

The pattern behind all five

Every leak comes from the same wrong assumption: that a lead only counts once the customer has done everything you asked.

Flip it. The lead counts the moment they raise their hand — one click, name and phone. Everything after that is your job, not theirs. Shops that internalize this capture the demand they're already paying for; shops that don't keep buying clicks that evaporate.

Plug leak #1 this week. LeadCapture ST captures every lead on the first click and puts it in your ServiceTitan Bookings tab instantly.
